Wimbledon Winners

The Wimbledon Championship is a tennis tournament organized by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, held in June/July at Wimbledon, London, England, United Kingdom since 1877. It is the oldest tennis competition, and is the third Grand Slam tournament played in the year, preceded by the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and followed by the U.S. Open. The tournament is played on grass as a surface, being the only one of its category to do so.

General Information

In 1868 it was decided to form the All England Croquet Club in London. A year later the club got its own ground, having rented four acres of land in Wimbledon between Worple Road and the tracks of the London and South Western Railway. A few more years later, in 1875, the members of the All England Club approved the allocation of one of the playing fields in Wimbledon for fans of the popular summer games - badminton and the newly invented lawn tennis. In 1876, in view of the growing popularity of lawn tennis, four more courts were allocated for this game. In April 1877 the name of the club was officially changed to "All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club" (from 1882 to 1899 all mention of croquet was excluded from its name, and when it was brought back, the club was called "Lawn Tennis and Croquet"). In June of that year, it was decided to hold its first lounge tennis championship a month later. According to popular history, the proceeds from this competition were to go toward the purchase of a new horse rink to level the playing fields, and the entry fee was set at one pound, and the entrance fee for spectators was one shilling.

By the time of the first All England Club Championship its organizers had made fundamental changes to the original rules of lawn tennis proposed by Major Wingfield. The shape of the court, tapering towards the net, became rectangular; the height of the net began to decrease (it was further reduced in 1878, 1880 and 1882); the scoring system, borrowed from the game of racquetball (with sets lasting up to 15 points and involving the transition of serving only after a point was lost by the server) was changed to the familiar system of classical tennis in halls with short sets, in which "every service mattered." In addition, the right to a second serve was introduced, if the first one hit the net or outside the area set aside for it. Thus, already in its first year, the tournament, which later became known as the Wimbledon tournament, was held by rules that were quite close to modern ones.
