History

The tournament was first held as the U.S. National Men's Singles Championship in August 1881 at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island and in singles only. Only member clubs of the U.S. National Men's Tennis Association were eligible to participate in the tournament. The first singles winner was Richard Sears.

In 1900 the U.S. National Men's Doubles Championship was held for the first time. It was first held separately in the eastern and western parts of the country to determine the top two teams, which would then play each other, with the winner going on to face the current titleholder for the championship. The practice of preliminary rounds was discontinued for the men's portion of the tournament in 1911 and for the women's portion in 1918.

The U.S. Women's National Singles Championship was first held in 1887 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Two years later, in 1889, followed the doubles tournament, the U.S. Women's National Doubles Championship, and the U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship.

With the start of the Open Era in 1968, all five championships were combined into one overall tournament called the U.S. Open at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. In addition, the 1968 tournament was the first time that it was open to professional tennis players, who had not been allowed to play in tournaments until then. That year, there were 96 men and 63 women competing, with a prize pool of $100,000. In 1978, the venue was moved from Forest Hills to Flushing Meadows, where the tournament has been held every year to the present day.

The main court of the tournament is Arthur Ashe Stadium, named after American tennis player Arthur Ashe, who won the first Open Era tournament in 1968.The arena has a capacity of 23,000 seats. Besides the main court, matches are played on three more courts with stands for spectators and on 13 courts without stands.

All courts in the tournament have DecoTurf hardwood surfacing. Matches are played outdoors
