Port-Vila, capital of the independent island republic of Vanuatu, an archipelago in the southwest Pacific Ocean formerly known as the New Hebrides. The town lies on the southeast coast of Efate Island and has a good harbor. During World War II (1939-1945) Port-Vila was an Allied air base.
